They say a woman can remember what she was wearing on every important occasion of her life. Do you (men and women both) remember what you were wearing the day you met your current partner? Do you remember what they were wearing?
I was backstage, volunteering at a Howard Dean speech during the last election. Sean Penn was there with Jessamyn's uncle, who was very pleased to meet me when I walked up to introduce myself as one of Jessamyn's friends.
Sean Penn avoided eye contact with most of us, most of the day. He was happy to talk to the politicians and celebrities who congregated backstage, but he just didn't want anything to do with the rest of us.
Regardless of that, 2/3 of the way through the evening, I walked up to him and stuck out my hand and said, "I just wanted to tell you how much I respect your work." He gave me the limpest handshake you can imagine, looked mostly at the ground, and mumbled something I couldn't hear.
Nice fellow.
"Your money or your life" for for its super-practical system for evaluating expenditures.
"Wishcraft" for teaching me that you can't fight the system. Don't try to change yourself, organize your environment to provide the support you need.
"Diet for a Small Planet" for first getting me to think about food and its connection to larger social issues.
"Always we begin again" for its focus on the practice of gratitude.
My book for all the things that have come from it.
